Mountain Scene - Pollies ditch positivity to bring back the biff

Nationally the lolly scramble is in full flight and insults are being tossed around freely. Locally the politicians are out in force and the hoardings are up, complete with plenty of childishly scribbled satirical humour.

That’s right, in case you have been living under a rock somewhere and not noticed, its election time!

Mountain Scene - An Ode to 40 years of Winter Festival

30/6/2014

Mark wilson Mountain Scene Queenstown column
Happy 40th Birthday Winter Festival my old friend. It’s great to be around to help you consecrate this milestone with all of your friends, adoring fans and agglomeration of groupies, B grade celebs and other hanger’s on seeking to bask in your reflected glory.  You’re a true local icon whose antics have made you legendary around the world.  From humble beginnings you have really grown in stature over the years, maturing into something we can all be proud of a showpiece for our region and a celebration of all that this great part of New Zealand can offer.

Mountain Scene - I lost but found new folk and roads

10/5/2014

John Key with Mark Wilson in Queenstown
Sorry Queenstown you won't be getting a local MP, not for now anyway.

My recent quest began in December without evening knowing you could join a political party. 5 Months later I’ve come to appreciate and respect the internal workings of one. I've met some real salt of the earth folk, enjoyed having an audience to listen to my ramblings and even discovered a couple of new roads, which for someone who has done 80'000 + km's around the South in the last 2.5 years is no mean feat.

Mountain Scene - Mind the Distracted Pedestrian

10/11/2013

Mark Wilson Mountain Scene Queenstown
It’s finally happened, tragically and possibly for anyone familiar with the behaviour on some of our local roads, predictably, a pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a vehicle at Arthur's Point.

The unfortunate victim a Korean man was star gazing.  He had probably never seen so much skyward action. The southern night sky is truly a sight to behold to those from big cities where air and light pollution have long since reduced the influence of the stars and galaxies to a dim glow.

Mountain Scene - Don't hit on our lady

14/9/2013

With comet like regularity every few years a small chorus of discontent begins to stir in Queenstown. It wafts in on the westerly breeze catching the eyes and noses of a few over stimulted types and leads to a flurry of sensationalist letters to the editors and subsequent media responses. The ensuring melee draws attention to the apparent prime culprit for tarnishing New Zealand’s clean green image and melting the world’s polar ice caps, the one and only Lady of the Lake, Queenstown’s iconic steamship the Earnslaw.

Mountain Scene - I got the dirty ole denim blues

19/7/2013

Mark Wilson Queenstown Mountain Scene
Last Friday night innocently minding my own business propped up against a well maintained shoulder press machine, gathering up the muscular fortitude for another crack at throwing a few weights around, I was approached by a spritely looking young gentleman who gestured awkwardly for me to remove my headphones.

Not really in the mood for chin-wagging as I was nipple deep in a great 80’s glam rock play list I begrudgingly removed one headphone  in the interests of politeness.

“Sir could you please not wear denim next time you train, it’s not allowed.”

Mountain Scene - Why I'm addicted to Winter Festival

23/6/2013

Picture
2013 will be my 10th consecutive year fully immersed in the nipple hardening extravaganza that is Winter Festival.  I dabbled as a spectator and competitor prior but 2004 was the year things really happened for me; I got involved speedos and all and fell in love with the fun and frivolity of this special event.

Mountain Scene - Top spot, pity about dress code

What a great spot to compile a column – I’m on the 26th floor of an inner-city Vancouver hotel overlooking the harbour, rolling out boomer country music from The Highwaymen while tapping away on my keyboard.

The grandeur in every direction from my window nearly makes up for the dusty state of my head after a few reasonably powerful nights exploring the nightlife with some ex-Queenstowners.

Mountain Scene - My inspiring wish-list for 2013

I got new sheets, the Richie McCaw book (talks way too much about the bloody Crusaders so I had to stop reading it), socks, undies, more grey hair and a bit of a beer gut for Christmas this year.

Quite typical but hardly inspiring so it seemed apt to wish for a few things that would inspire me a little more in 2013 and here they are.

  •  The New Zealand Transport Agency wake up and realise that Queenstown needs a two-lane bridge over the Kawarau River. There are more lanes going into Oamaru ...
need I say more? Toll those JAFAs for their own roads and give us a new bridge.

Mountain Scene - Reverse retirement is the way to go

It may seem semi-detached from reality but I have no plans for the advanced years of my life.

Firstly, with the rate my memory is malfunctioning (possibly due to the accumulation of quiet ales) coupled with excessive levels of joint degradation, my ability to function into old age will be minimal at best so it would be remiss of me to plan years as a silver fox golfing and tending to my petunias.

Mountain Scene - Harden up Queenstown – it’s just snow

Trotting around last week with veteran Mountain Scene chief news hound Scoop on our usual Friday morning run, basking in the early spring sunshine, the mildness of the weather was the subject of our banter.

As we solved the world’s problems, interrupted only to take a cheeky glance at nature’s more fortunate-looking athletes in their sleek attire speeding past us, we commented on the mild winter and the promise of an early summer and its associated influx of bikini-clad Swedish backpackers to the main bay.

Mountain Scene - The wonderful Olympic form so far

The Olympics, for purists, has a full array of sporting action screening 24 hours a day.

For the curious it offers a chance to marvel at sports that rarely see the light of day, often involving countries you thought only existed in Sacha Baron Cohen mockumentaries.

Lastly, there are those of us who also enjoy the games for its unrivalled beauty.

Mountain Scene - My Winter Fest sensory overload

I don’t remember it being this hard, partly due to my early onset of dementia, partly because it gets much harder with age.

The all-day, all-night grind associated with ensuring the festival and its many extravagant courses are knocked off and enjoyed is a young man’s game yet many of us would-be Peter Pans are not willing to pass the baton on just yet.

Mountain Scene - The essential May survival guide

May, believe it or not, is a dull month in our fine mountain retreat – the only highlights being Mountain Scene chief news hound ‘Scoop’ Chandler’s birthday and opening weekend for we southern duckshooters.

Despite the resort pausing to catch its breath, Queenstown’s PR machine has aggressively penetrated the globe with images of a vibrant nightlife, plentiful jobs for all and a laid-back lifestyle where people pay you to simply turn up to work hung over and post status updates on Facebook.

So it must be a shock to the system for new arrivals to find reality’s a little different.

Mountain Scene - We’ll sight them on the beaches

Out of a selfless concern for the future of Queenstown’s tourism industry and inspired by David Attenborough’s Frozen Planet series I’ve spent the last two weeks tracking one of the great tourist migrations.

Scandinavian tourist season from January to April each year involves the migration of juveniles making their first trip out of the nest halfway around the world to escape the harsh northern winter.

While out on Saturday night I hazily remember a conversation with a friend over from Canada about a $4000 bottle of wine he had seen on a menu at a local bar.

Maybe it’s my small town upbringing or the slim grasp on reality that I still maintain which leads me to believe that there is no possible situation warranting the purchase of such a bottle unless, of course, the mighty Southland Stags win the ITM Cup or the proposed Milford tunnel somehow rips a hole in the space-time continuum, linking up with the Stockholm Metro to bring in trainloads of confused-looking Scandinavian tourists blurry-eyed and in search of comforting.

I find the lead-up to Christmas extremely frustrating.

It’s that time of year when trying to get anyone to do anything is nigh on impossible, due to overloaded social calendars and a decent dollop of FOMO – fear of missing out.

No one wants to miss the opportunity to peacock around in their best stepping-out kit and lap up some long-overdue southern sunshine at the town’s best afternoon and early evening glamour spots.

Mountain Scene - An election serve of my humble pie

Despite the plethora of tacky campaign adverts, stock standard election-year bickering and vote buying, it’s refreshingly easy to be distracted from the election hype, living in this unique part of the world.

You only have to take a glance out the window at snow-dusted mountains – in November?! – to realise the insignificance of anything a government can do compared with the real forces that shape our world.
